Dakgalbi - A must-eat food in Korea

Hello, my foreign friends!

If you can handle a little bit of spiciness, I’d love to introduce you to Dakgalbi, one of the must-try dishes in Korea!

Dakgalbi is a Korean-style stir-fried barbecue dish made with chicken, vegetables, rice cakes, and noodles cooked together on a large iron plate.

It’s usually prepared with bite-sized pieces of chicken marinated in a spicy gochujang (Korean red chili paste) sauce, then stir-fried with vegetables, chewy rice cakes, sweet potatoes, and udon noodles.

Even though the name "galbi" might make you think it has bones, dakgalbi is actually boneless! It’s typically made with chicken thigh or breast meat, making it super easy to eat. The best places often use only tender chicken thigh meat for an even more delicious and juicy texture. 😋🔥

Dakgalbi originated in Korea in the 1960s in a region called Chuncheon, located in Gangwon Province. Initially, it was a dish where chicken was marinated and grilled over charcoal as a more affordable alternative to pork. However, as its popularity grew, the dish evolved into the iron plate stir-fried version we know today.

Even now, Chuncheon is famous for dakgalbi, and there’s even a “Dakgalbi Street” where you can find numerous restaurants specializing in this delicious dish!

But don’t worry if you’re visiting Seoul and don’t have time to travel all the way to Chuncheon. There are plenty of famous dakgalbi chain restaurants in Seoul as well. You can easily find popular spots like Myeongdong Dakgalbi or Yugane Dakgalbi, which are widely available throughout the city. So, you won’t miss out on tasting this amazing dish! 😊🔥

Would you like to try authentic Chuncheon-style dakgalbi on your next visit? Let me know! 😋

When you visit a dakgalbi restaurant, you usually don’t have to worry about cooking it yourself. The staff will expertly stir-fry everything for you, so all you need to do is sit back and enjoy!

Once you've savored the delicious, spicy chicken, don’t finish all the sauce just yet! Save some of that flavorful seasoning because you absolutely must try the fried rice at the end. The staff will mix rice into the remaining sauce and stir-fry it until it becomes golden and crispy.

Ending your meal with fried rice is a must—it's the perfect way to wrap up the experience and keep you feeling satisfied. After all, Koreans love their rice, and this final touch is an essential part of the dakgalbi experience! 🍚🔥😋

So, when you try dakgalbi, make sure to leave room for the fried rice! Trust me, you won’t regret it! 😉

If iron plate dakgalbi looks like this, then the original charcoal-grilled dakgalbi, which was the very first version of the dish, has a completely different style.

Instead of stir-frying with spicy sauce, charcoal-grilled dakgalbi features soy sauce-marinated chicken thigh meat, grilled directly over a charcoal fire. The smoky aroma from the charcoal adds an incredible depth of flavor, making it absolutely delicious.

However, one downside is that compared to iron plate dakgalbi, the portion might feel a bit smaller. Since it’s grilled piece by piece rather than mixed with vegetables and other ingredients, it may not feel as filling. But if you love smoky, grilled flavors, this is a must-try version of dakgalbi!

Here’s the potato pancake (gamjajeon) we ordered as a side—doesn’t it look perfectly golden and crispy? 😍

And here’s a pro tip for charcoal-grilled soy sauce dakgalbi: dip it in melted cheese!

The combination of the smoky, savory chicken with creamy, gooey cheese is an absolute game-changer. If you ever get the chance to try it, don’t forget to add cheese for an extra indulgent experience! 😋💛

Of course, no meal is complete without a drink to pair with it! 🍶✨

A glass of makgeolli (Korean rice wine) was the perfect match for this meal, making it even more satisfying. The slight sweetness and refreshing taste of makgeolli go so well with the smoky and savory flavors of dakgalbi—it’s a must-try combination!

Since most people are more familiar with iron plate dakgalbi, let me share a basic recipe so you can try making it yourself! 🔥🍗🍚 Stay tuned! 😊
